N.E.W – Wizkid, Obi Cubana, Kizz Daniel and Sound Sultan lead Nigeria’s entertainment top trends for this week

The birthday of a music superstar, the passing of another music superstar; the burial ceremony of the mum of a nightclub and business owner, a revealing announcement by another singer, here are the top trends in the Nigeria entertainment sector that made the headlines this week.

Wizkid

Wizkid turns 31 – Nigerian singer and songwriter, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid, Wizzy, Big Wiz or Starboy recently turned 31. Fans (Wizkid FC) of the musical superstar took to social media to celebrate his birthday with trending hashtags #WizkidAt31 #WIZKIDDAY. Wizkid is a global award-winning music artiste who made his debut in the Nigeria music scene in 2011.  Among his top achievements is being featured by Drake for One Dance, a song that he has writing credits to and appears on the 2018 Guinness World Record as the most-streamed song on Spotify. Wizkid also became one of the first Nigerians to win a Grammy for Best Music Video on the collaboration with Beyoncé for the song, ‘Brown Skin Girl’.

Obi Cubana

Obi Cubana mother’s burial – Nigerian nightlife entrepreneur and the chairman of Cubana Groub, Obi Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana buried his mother in grand style. The location, Oba in Anambra State welcomed several celebrities, politicians and business people who turned out in large numbers for the funeral ceremony turned carnival. The funeral which was streamed live on the internet had notable personalities and friends of Obi spraying bundles of Naira and foreign currencies. Lots of drinks and cows were also donated to Obi for the funeral. Obi revealed that he got over 240 cows from his friends as support of the event, with Cubana chief priest donating 46 cows. The funeral revealed a lavish display of wealth as Obi Cubana claims that the opulence associated with how his late mother was buried will ‘make people hungry for death’.

Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel’s first gift to sons– Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe who is a popular Nigerian Singer known as Kizz Daniel revealed that he lost his third child – Jamal, four days after his birth. In May, the singer announced the birth of his twins, Jamil and Jelani. He has now announced that they were actually triplets and he lost one of them. This was revealed just after buying a house for his boys. Kizz Daniel on his Instagram page revealed that this was his first gift to his sons. His post also quoted him saying, “God blessed me with three boys a while back; JAMAL, JALIL and JELANI (triplets) but four days after I lost JAMAL. Nevertheless, I made a promise to him that I will be the best father in the whole galaxy to his brothers.”

Sound Sultan

Sound Sultan is buried – Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan was finally laid to rest in New Jersey on the same day he died according to Muslim rites. Sound Sultan passed after a hard battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His family, friends, colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans mourned his sudden passing. He is survived by a wife, three children and his siblings. Sound Sultan will be remembered as one of the most original and creative entertainers from Nigeria. His songs like Motherland, Orobo, Bushmeat (Ole), Mathematics, Rainy Days, and Gengen will forever remain classics. RIP to the Naija Ninja!
